From Michele: Oftentimes our lives change in a split second of time. While we may want to look back thinking of what our lives used to be, the only way to succeed is by moving ahead each day. So when Lauren was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, she didn’t let that hold her back. Use her story and her example to see that life isn’t about what you are given…it’s about what you give back.
At the age of 11, my life changed forever. Over the span of a few months, I dropped more than 20 pounds (unintentionally), drank gallons and gallons of water a week, used the bathroom TRIPLE my normal amount, and became someone I wasn’t. I was tired and irritable and not the happy 11 year old I once was. I was into cheerleading and gymnastics, hanging out with all my friends, and staying up late watching movies with my family; all of which stopped suddenly.
Being Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes
On Thursday, May 24th of 2012, my mom surprised my brother and I with a trip to a water park we loved to visit. I put on my one piece bathing suit. My moms jaw dropped when she realized she could see my ribs. She said her heart stopped realizing that I was so ill. The next morning I was at the doctors. Blood test was done and I was diagnosed with Type one diabetes.
I was currently dying from intense stages of DKA. (diabetic ketoacidosis: A serious diabetes complication.)
At the Hospital
I was immediately rushed to the hospital where I stayed in ICU for two days, before being moved to a room for what would be the remainder of a week. As soon as the insulin and treatments began, I was becoming myself again.
I left that hospital the happy 11 year old I once was, but with a new lifestyle.
A New Lifestyle
Pricking my finger many times a day, counting carbs and insulin injections began. As I got older, I switched to a pump and continuous glucose monitor, and THRIVING with my disease.
What Now?
I am now 18, a pre-nursing major with a minor in nutrition, and on my way to becoming a certified diabetes educator. I have never views my illness as the enemy, but instead let it motivate me to help others.
